3. Follow up discussion on scales and strategies A. What is RWM Strategy: it is essential to define the RWM Strategy with each project and bring it into a concrete and coherent statement. The strategy could be different with each project. However the final common result should be measurable and valid across all Niles of NBDC. Towards this end Debbie has prepared a 3-pager and posted it on the wiki. Members are expected to comment on it. Using the feedback Tilahun and Debbie will work on it more to produce the common result which should be ready for the May workshop after which all individual projects will have same reference. On the same issue, the concept of "strategy" is said to be a bit loud. Therefore it is suggested to use another term like uptake.
B. Reality Check: it was noted that it is essential to identify gaps before the May Science workshop. Nile 2: is looking below the Wereda level and create integration. Hydrological, social and institutional factors will be considered with the landscape. Nile 3: agrees on the idea and gives emphasis on interaction & feedback amongst the projects Nile 4: Identifying strategies and working on modeling which involves ICRAF as well. Inputs on Livestock will be given by Amare while Teklu will work on crop productivity. Kindie will look into the Economic model for which he is planning to use Optimization. Field data is still needed as there is difference in the farming system in the different basins and also as the data on livestock and land cover is outdated. In general note is made that it will be hard to expect accurate model at a basin level. N4 in general will be looking up while N2 looks downward. However emphasis is given for N4, to maintain the diversity & microspecifity of the landscape as going very high up will make the whole scale flat.
4. Finalizing reflective naming of NBDC projects Nile 5: Coordination and Change (CaC) Nile 4: Assessing Change & Determining Consequence (ACDC) Niles 2 &3 will come up with their own respective name at another time. 5. Preparing the May Science and Reflection Workshop The objective of the workshop is said to be to look into the science progress made so far. Discussion was made on the general format of the agenda in a way that can bring more reflection and integration. It was also noted that a separate project meeting day should be assigned at the end.
